Neuquén public health system faces rising demand and laboratory pressure
The public health system in Neuquén, Argentina, is experiencing a significant increase in demand, with over 512,000 users currently utilizing its services. This figure represents more than 73% of the province's estimated 710,000 inhabitants, up from approximately 484,000 users in early 2024.
Health Minister Martín Regueiro noted that the growth necessitates a rapid but organized expansion of healthcare capacity across different levels of complexity. A primary goal is to strengthen local healthcare facilities to prevent unnecessary patient transfers to the capital or more complex medical centers.
Laboratory activity has also surged. The number of laboratory determinations rose from 8.2 million in 2023 to 10.3 million in 2025. In 2026, the system had already reached 9.7 million determinations by the first half of October. This high volume has strained supplies, forcing the province to initiate new bidding processes for reagents after stocks intended to last until late November began running low in early September.
