Neuquén public health system expansion
Overview
The public health system in Neuquén, Argentina, has seen a significant increase in demand, with user numbers rising from approximately 484,000 in early 2024 to over 512,000 by late 2026. This growth represents more than 73% of the province’s estimated population. Health Minister Martín Regueiro indicated that this surge requires an organized expansion of healthcare capacity to strengthen local facilities and reduce patient transfers to the capital.
Laboratory activity has also experienced a sharp increase, with determinations rising from 8.2 million in 2023 to 10.3 million in 2025. By October 2026, the system had already reached 9.7 million determinations, causing supply strains and necessitating new bidding processes for reagents.
In response to these challenges and to improve access in remote areas, the provincial government launched ‘SIEN, tu pediatra en línea’. This telephone-based service provides medical guidance for children and adolescents aged 0 to 16, offering initial assessments via phone and potential transitions to video calls or in-person referrals.
