Neurology pioneer Coşkun Özdemir passes away at 97

Prof. Dr. Coşkun Özdemir, a pioneering figure in the field of neurology and a former president of the Istanbul Medical Chamber, has passed away at the age of 97. Memorial services were held at the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine Aziz Sancar Amphitheater, followed by a funeral ceremony at the Levent Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Mosque.

Colleagues and academics honored Özdemir for his significant scientific legacy and his leadership in neuromuscular diseases. Prof. Dr. Murat Kürtüncü, Head of the Neurology Department, described him as a ‘teacher of teachers’ who shaped the education of many current medical professionals. Other speakers noted his social responsibility and his role as a founding president of the Turkish Neuromuscular Diseases Association.

His daughter, Özlem Özdemir Erol, spoke of his profound influence on her life, citing his love for books and humanity as primary inspirations. Özdemir was also recognized for his long-standing contributions as a writer for Cumhuriyet newspaper.
