Death of neurologist Coşkun Özdemir

Prof. Dr. Coşkun Özdemir, a prominent Turkish neurologist and former president of the Istanbul Medical Chamber, has passed away at the age of 97.

A specialist in neuropsychiatry and a pioneer in neuromuscular diseases, Özdemir founded the Turkish Neuromuscular Diseases Association (KASDER) in 1978. His career included serving as the Head of the Department of Neurology at Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine from 1989 to 1996 and working at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard University.

Following his death, memorial services were held at the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, followed by a funeral ceremony at the Levent Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Mosque. Colleagues honored his legacy, with Prof. Dr. Murat Kürtüncü describing him as a ‘teacher of teachers’. Beyond his medical career, Özdemir was recognized for his leadership in defending medical values during the post-1980 coup period and for his work as a writer for Cumhuriyet newspaper.
