Neurosurgeon faces investigation over 2 million PLN in disputed medical bills
An audit by the National Health Fund (NFZ) has uncovered irregularities regarding medical billing by neurosurgeon Dr. Łukasz Grabarczyk at hospitals in northeastern Poland, including the Pisz County Hospital.
Investigators found that thermolysis procedures, used for chronic pain management, may have been incorrectly billed as hospitalizations when they could have been performed in an outpatient setting. In Pisz, Dr. Grabarczyk reportedly performed over 2,200 such procedures between 2023 and 2025. Based on NFZ billing points, the total value of the invoices issued to the hospital could exceed 2 million PLN.
The hospital in Pisz has withheld part of the payments and is currently involved in a legal dispute with the doctor, who disputes the audit findings. For one year of services alone, the facility was required to return over 670,000 PLN. Similar billing patterns involving the same surgeon have reportedly been identified in hospitals in Mogilno and Miastko.
