Medical billing fraud investigations in Poland

Overview

Investigations by the National Health Fund (NFZ) in Poland have uncovered multiple instances of alleged medical billing irregularities and fraud involving high-value procedures.

In northeastern Poland, neurosurgeon Dr. Łukasz Grabarczyk is facing an audit regarding thermolysis procedures. Investigators suggest that procedures used for chronic pain management may have been incorrectly billed as hospitalizations rather than outpatient services. In Pisz County Hospital alone, the value of disputed invoices could exceed 2 million PLN, leading to legal disputes between the facility and the doctor.

Separately, in Rzeszów, the former director of the Fryderyk Chopin University Clinical Hospital, Dr. Janusz Ł., has been indicted for defrauding the NFZ of more than 1.3 million PLN. The charges involve the improper billing of urological procedures performed with a Da Vinci robot between 2023 and 2024. The indictment also includes allegations of falsifying medical documentation and endangering patient health, with one patient reportedly suffering significant injury.
