Nevada approves robotaxi licenses for Tesla, Waymo, and Uber

The Nevada Transportation Authority has unanimously approved commercial licenses for autonomous robotaxis in Clark County, potentially allowing up to 8,000 vehicles to operate over the next 12 months. The approval includes permits for Tesla, Waymo, and Uber.

Tesla has applied for up to 5,000 vehicles, though company engineers noted that 2,500 units might be a more realistic target within the first year. Waymo and Uber have each been granted permits for 1,000 vehicles. Uber intends to operate a hybrid model using technology from partners such as Motional and Zoox.

Local taxi companies and the Livery Operators Association have expressed opposition, citing concerns regarding market saturation and increased traffic congestion, particularly in the area between the airport and Las Vegas Boulevard. Some reports indicate specific restrictions on Tesla's deployment, including speed limits and designated corridors, to ensure safety and human supervision.
