Nevada seeks to host NASA Space Academy
Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony is advocating for the state to submit a Request for Information (RFI) to NASA to host the agency’s new Space Academy. The proposal aims to position Nevada as a central hub for space exploration, supporting both the federal Space Force initiative and the private sector.
NASA plans to host its first cadets in temporary quarters by 2028, with a permanent facility expected to be operational by 2031. The academy is envisioned as a national institution, similar to the Merchant Marine Academy, designed to train hundreds of new NASA civil servants annually for roles within the agency or the Space Force.
Proponents of the bid highlight Nevada’s extensive federal land and existing infrastructure, such as the Nevada National Security Site, as key advantages for training and operational readiness, despite the state lacking the coastal access found in Florida, Texas, or California.
