Nevados de Chillán volcano erupts with 900-meter column
The Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex in Chile's Ñuble Region experienced a significant explosion during the early hours of Sunday, September 27. The event, detected at 05:17 by the Southern Andes Volcanological Observatory, produced an emission column approximately 900 meters high.
According to Sernageomin, the explosion included incandescence, the projection of pyroclastic material toward the northwest, and ballistic projections near the crater. The ash column dispersed primarily toward the south-southeast. The activity was linked to long-period earthquakes and tremors caused by fluid dynamics within the volcanic system.
In response to the increased activity, which has been trending upward since September 18, authorities have expanded the safety perimeter around the active crater from one kilometer to two kilometers. This measure affects the communes of Pinto and Coihueco. The complex remains under Yellow Technical Alert, and Senapred has maintained a Preventive Early Warning for the area. Officials have urged residents, tourists, and operators to strictly respect all access restrictions.
