Nevados de Chillán volcanic activity
Overview
The Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex in Chile has experienced a period of heightened activity characterized by increased seismic events. On September 23, monitoring stations detected long-period earthquakes and seismic activity linked to the movement of fluids within the volcanic system. Sernageomin noted that while energy levels fluctuated, pyroclastic material deposits suggested changes in the system’s internal dynamics.
On September 25, authorities expanded the safety perimeter around the complex from one kilometer to two kilometers to protect against potential exposure to ash, volcanic gases, and pyroclastic material. Senapred maintained a Yellow Technical Alert for the complex and a Preventive Early Warning for the communes of Pinto and Coihueco.
Following a trend of increasing activity since September 18, the volcano experienced a significant explosion in the early hours of Sunday, September 27. Detected at 05:17 by the Southern Andes Volcanological Observatory, the event produced an emission column approximately 900 meters high. Sernageomin reported that the explosion included incandescence, the projection of pyroclastic material toward the northwest, and ballistic projections near the crater, with the ash column dispersing primarily toward the south-southeast. The complex remains under Yellow Technical Alert.
On October 26, the complex recorded six eruptive pulses, with gas and pyroclastic material columns reaching heights of up to 2,300 meters. The largest emission occurred at 17:24. Despite these pulses, the complex remains at a yellow technical alert level, with a two-kilometer security perimeter maintained around Emission Center 3 (CE3).
