Nevados de Chillán volcano records increased seismic activity
The Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex in Chile has recorded increased seismic activity associated with the movement of fluids within the volcanic system. On Wednesday, September 23, at 07:05 local time, monitoring stations detected a long-period earthquake with a displacement of 294 cm². This followed another seismic event on Tuesday night with a local magnitude of 2.5 at a depth of 0.3 kilometers.
Chile’s National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) reported that while subsequent seismicity has shown lower energy levels, the presence of pyroclastic material deposits near the complex suggests changes in the internal dynamics of the system. Adverse weather conditions have prevented direct visual observation of the craters via surveillance cameras.
The volcanic complex is located in the Ñuble Region of Chile, approximately 50 to 100 kilometers from Argentine border towns such as Las Ovejas, Varvarco, and Manzano Amargo. Sernageomin has maintained a yellow technical alert, indicating that activity is above baseline levels, though current assessments suggest no imminent danger to nearby populations.
