New cancer treatments implemented in Brazilian hospitals
Two Brazilian healthcare facilities have introduced advanced medical procedures to improve cancer treatment accessibility and efficacy.
In the Distrito Federal, Hospital de Base (HBDF) performed its first bone marrow transplant on October 8. Managed by the Instituto de Gestão Estratégica de Saúde do Distrito Federal (IgesDF), the hospital now offers autologous transplants, which use a patient's own stem cells. This milestone expands high-complexity treatment options available through the Unified Health System (SUS).
In Rio Branco, Acre, the Hospital de Câncer do Acre (Unacon) has begun performing radiosurgery. This non-invasive radiotherapy technique uses highly precise radiation beams to treat tumors, such as brain metastases, or lesions in the liver, kidneys, and spine. The implementation aims to reduce the need for patients to seek specialized treatment in other states, thereby lowering costs and minimizing the physical and emotional strain on patients and their families.
