New Delhi hotel fire kills 21, dozens rescued

A fire broke out at a hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of South New Delhi on 3 June 2026. Police said the blaze, which is believed to have started in a ground‑floor restaurant, engulfed the building, prompting residents on higher floors to jump to escape. At least 21 people were confirmed dead and about 40 others have been rescued so far.

Local officials, including senior police officer Jitendra Kumar, described the incident as one of the worst hotel fires in the capital in recent years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims' families and wished a swift recovery to the injured.

The fire highlighted safety concerns in densely populated neighbourhoods that house many students and young professionals.
