New Delhi hotel fire kills 21, including 18 Africans

A fire broke out on June 5 2026 at the Flourish Stay Bed‑and‑Breakfast in the Malviya Nagar area of south New Delhi, destroying the building and killing 21 people while injuring 26. Among those killed were 13 foreign nationals, including citizens of Nigeria, Kirghizstan, Mozambique, Liberia, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Congo and Iraq. An African news report noted that 18 of the dead were Africans receiving medical treatment in India.

Delhi police have filed a culpable‑homicide case against the hotel owner after discovering that the establishment was operating 25 rooms despite a licence for only six and lacked a valid fire‑safety certificate. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs is in contact with the victims' embassies and has promised assistance, while local authorities say they will tighten safety inspections of public‑accommodation facilities.
