BRICS Summit 2026: Gala dinner in New Delhi sparks political debate

During the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, world leaders and dignitaries attended a gala dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam. The event featured a specially curated vegetarian and vegan menu that highlighted Indian culinary diversity and emphasized the use of millets, such as pearl, sorghum, and barnyard millet, to promote agricultural sustainability.

The summit saw the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration 2026, which calls for reforms in global governance and stronger representation for developing nations. Attendees included Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The vegetarian menu sparked a domestic political dispute in India. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Pawan Khera of the Congress party, criticized the decision to serve an exclusively vegetarian spread, arguing it ignored the dietary preferences of the 80% of Indians who are non-vegetarian and failed to showcase the country's full culinary heritage. The BJP defended the choice, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stating that guests relished the nutritious and flavorful regional vegetarian cuisine. Additionally, the Ministry of External Affairs clarified that a viral photo of a vegetarian tray was actually the menu for the International Media Centre, not the world leaders.
