German rail infrastructure sees new station opening and technical upgrades

Various regional rail and transit infrastructure projects are reaching milestones across Germany.

A new station in Fangschleuse is set to open, located approximately two kilometers closer to the Tesla plant in Grünheide than the previous site. Deutsche Bahn expects around 16,000 daily passengers at the new location. The RE1 regional line will initially stop there hourly, with service increasing to twice per hour starting August 25. Construction for freight rail capacity at the site is also ongoing.

In Hamburg, DB InfraGO has commissioned a new electronic interlocking system (ESTW) in Altona. This upgrade is a prerequisite for the future construction of the Hamburg-Altona long-distance and regional station and is designed to be ETCS-ready. However, some service limitations remain in the Eidelstedt area.

Other regional updates include the completion of barrier-free upgrades at the Jenertal stop in Jena and the conclusion of water pipe replacement works near Leipzig's main station, allowing regular bus and tram schedules to resume for the new school year. Meanwhile, Lübeck Hauptbahnhof faces a total rail shutdown this weekend due to interlocking renewals, requiring thousands of passengers to use replacement buses.
