New Hampshire Democratic Senate primary race tightens

A new poll from the University of New Hampshire Survey Center shows a tightening Democratic primary race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Representative Chris Pappas, a four-term incumbent, leads progressive challenger Karishma Manzur by 13 percentage points, with 47 percent support for Pappas and 34 percent for Manzur.

The race has shifted significantly since September, when Pappas held a 51-point lead over Manzur. Manzur, a medical scientist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is running a grassroots campaign focused on economic inequality, universal healthcare, and ending war profiteering. Despite raising significantly less than Pappas, who has raised nearly $13.4 million, Manzur has gained momentum among younger and socialist voters.

In a hypothetical general election matchup, Republican front-runner John E. Sununu leads Pappas 45 percent to 43 percent. The primary is scheduled for September 8.
