New Jersey Beaches Ready for Record 2026 Summer as Water Quality Remains High

New Jersey officials announced that the state’s ocean beaches and inland lakes are in excellent condition as the 2026 summer tourism season begins. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium reported that no ocean beach has been closed for bacterial contamination since 2022. During the 2025 season, 3,346 water samples were analyzed, resulting in only 11 temporary advisories and zero closures. Weekly bacterial testing and daily aerial surveillance continue through the summer, complemented by monitoring of harmful algal blooms in reservoirs such as Lake Hopatcong.

The state highlighted $141 million in federal, state and local funding for dune and beach‑renourishment projects in Monmouth and Cape May counties, aiming to protect coastlines after a late‑winter blizzard that minimized erosion. Tourism officials expect a surge of visitors, building on a 2025 season that attracted more than 124 million people and generated about $52 billion in economic impact. The milestone year coincides with the United States’ 250th anniversary and nearby FIFA World Cup events, positioning the Jersey Shore as a global destination for summer recreation.
