New Jersey Devils adopt low-cost goaltending strategy for 2026-27 season
The New Jersey Devils are entering the 2026-27 NHL season with a strategic approach to goaltending, prioritizing cost-effectiveness and roster depth. Following the trade of Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers, General Manager Sunny Mehta has opted to avoid heavy investments in the position due to its inherent unpredictability.
Instead, the team will rely on a tandem of Jake Allen and Nico Daws, both of whom carry cap hits of less than $2 million. Allen is expected to compete for the starting role after a strong previous season where he posted a .904 save percentage and a 2.74 goals-against average in 37 games.
This low-cost strategy is intended to provide the Devils with greater financial flexibility to upgrade other areas of the roster. Meanwhile, the increased competition during training camp has placed pressure on several players, including Nico Daws, to secure their long-term roles within the organization.
