New Jersey Devils roster and management overhaul
Overview
As the New Jersey Devils approach the 2026-27 season opener against the Philadelphia Flyers on October 1, management and head coach Sheldon Keefe are focused on optimizing roster depth and tactical configurations. Under General Manager Sunny Mehta, the team has implemented a significant roster overhaul to bolster an offense that ranked 27th last season. Key acquisitions include Luke Evangelista, Evan Rodrigues, and Anthony Mantha.
Following the trade of Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers, the team has adopted a low-cost goaltending strategy, looking to young Nico Daws to potentially secure the starting role alongside Jake Allen. Preseason performance, which resulted in a 3-0-1 record, highlighted the impact of newcomers like Amadeus Lombardi and Evangelista in creating high-danger scoring opportunities.
Tactically, the team is working to alleviate the defensive workload of captain Nico Hischier. Data suggests Hischier has frequently faced top-tier competition, which has impacted his offensive production. Coach Keefe indicated that the addition of Cody Glass, noted for his “high-percentile defensive impact,” will help distribute difficult matchups more effectively across the roster.
Off the ice, Hischier has expanded into the wellness sector as an investor and ambassador for Sensopro, a company producing the Sensopro Luna, a device designed to improve balance and coordination. The organization continues to manage injury setbacks, specifically the long-term absence of center Nick Bjugstad.
