New Jersey Devils undergo roster overhaul ahead of 2026-27 season

The New Jersey Devils are entering the 2026-27 NHL season following a period of significant roster restructuring under new general manager Sunny Mehta. Mehta, who previously served with the Florida Panthers, has focused on upgrading the team's offense by signing Anthony Mantha and acquiring Evan Rodrigues and Luke Evangelista through trades.

Addressing goaltending rumors, Mehta expressed reluctance to trade significant assets for star players like Connor Hellebuyck, citing the inherent randomness of the position. The team has moved on from Jacob Markstrom, who was traded to Florida, and is currently relying on 36-year-old Jake Allen as the starter, with prospect Nico Daws and David Rittich competing for backup duties.

On the ice, the Devils secured a 3-2 preseason victory over the New York Rangers, featuring goals from Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, and Timo Meier. The team is also working to integrate Dawson Mercer into a shifting lineup, where he is projected to play right wing on the third line.
