New Jersey Gov. Sherrill demands Lt. Gov. Caldwell's resignation
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has demanded the resignation of Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell following an independent investigation that substantiated allegations of sexual harassment and multiple ethics violations. The 61-page report, conducted by a law firm and overseen by former state Attorney General Christopher Porrino, concluded that Caldwell engaged in serious, repeated violations of state policy.
Key findings in the report include Caldwell making inappropriate sexual comments to a staffer after being rebuffed by a friend, and allegedly telling a female aide, “you young women are looking for young sperm.” The investigation also found that Caldwell attempted to secure promotions for a romantic partner who was a state employee and brought uninvited guests to several ticketed events without payment or reimbursement.
Governor Sherrill has given Caldwell until Friday to step down. Because the Lieutenant Governor is an elected constitutional officer, Sherrill noted that removal would require an impeachment process by the state legislature if he refuses to resign. Caldwell and his attorney, Thomas Calcagni, have denied the allegations, with Calcagni describing the investigation as “one-sided” and lacking sufficient evidence and due process.
