Investigation of New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell

New Jersey Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State Dale Caldwell is facing investigations into allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women and potential ethics violations, including the purported offering of state jobs.

Initial reports indicated that Governor Mikie Sherrill requested former Attorney General Christopher Porrino to lead the inquiry, which was thought to have begun a week prior. However, subsequent reports suggest the investigation may have been ongoing for months following an anonymous tip, with the law firm Lowenstein Sandler reportedly hired to conduct the inquiry. Porrino is currently leading the probe conducted by the firm.

Governor Sherrill has issued a statement asserting that she demands all administration members hold themselves to the highest standards, noting she will take appropriate action if evidence warrants while emphasizing the need to protect the privacy and safety of those involved. She has since reiterated that while she cannot confirm or deny specific personnel matters, she takes reports of misconduct “extremely seriously.”

Political reactions have intensified. Republican State Senator Anthony Bucco initially called for Caldwell to temporarily step down to avoid distracting from important state offices. Following this, New Jersey Republican Party Chairwoman Christine Hanlon called for Caldwell’s immediate resignation, arguing the office cannot function effectively during an unresolved inquiry.

Caldwell has denied the allegations in a letter to the state’s chief ethics officer, stating he has never pursued anyone romantically while conducting official business and suggesting that race could be a factor in the accusations. Despite the allegations, Caldwell has continued his public schedule and recently served as acting governor during the Governor’s absence.
