New Jersey legalizes plug-in solar for renters and homeowners
New Jersey has enacted the Garden State Balcony Solar Act, allowing residents, including renters and condo owners, to use plug-in solar panels. These systems connect to standard 120-volt outlets and can be placed on balconies, terraces, or in yards, providing an alternative to traditional, permanent rooftop installations.
While landlords may enforce “reasonable restrictions” regarding the size and placement of the panels, the law aims to make renewable energy more accessible to those who do not own their roofs. Advocacy groups suggest these systems can offset between 10% and 25% of a home’s power usage.
New Jersey joins a growing number of U.S. states legalizing “backyard solar.” Currently, ten states have passed legislation or have laws set to take effect, including Utah, Virginia, Colorado, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Maryland, Connecticut, California, and New Jersey. Approximately 24 other states are currently considering similar legislation.
