New Jersey legalizes plug-in solar panels for residents

New Jersey has implemented a new law allowing residents to use qualifying plug-in solar panels under 1,200 watts without requiring utility approval or interconnection requirements. The legislation, signed by Governor Mikie Sherrill, prevents landlords, homeowner associations, and municipalities from banning these systems or requiring specific permits for qualifying balcony solar.

These portable units, which often utilize microinverters to plug into standard 120-volt wall outlets, are intended to provide a more affordable alternative to traditional rooftop solar installations. Officials estimate that these systems can reduce typical monthly electric bills by up to $50, potentially saving residents up to $600 annually.
