New Jersey police warn of utility worker and fake jury‑duty scams
Police in two New Jersey counties issued warnings about separate scams targeting residents. In Essex County, officers in Nutley reported that a man posing as a utility worker entered an elderly resident's home, claimed to check for a gas leak, and left after stealing a large amount of cash from her wallet. The department released a photo of the suspect and urged residents to verify utility workers' identification before allowing entry.
In Monmouth County, Sheriff Shaun Golden warned that callers are impersonating members of the sheriff’s department, claiming the victim missed jury duty and demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest. Authorities advise anyone receiving such calls to contact the sheriff’s office directly and not to make any payments.
Both agencies recommend residents contact the relevant utility company or law‑enforcement agency if they are unsure about a visitor’s credentials.
