Fraud and scam activity in New Jersey

Overview

Law enforcement agencies in New Jersey have issued warnings and conducted arrests regarding various scams targeting residents, particularly the elderly.

In early August, authorities in Essex and Monmouth counties reported incidents involving individuals posing as utility workers to steal cash from homes and callers impersonating sheriff’s department members to demand payment for missed jury duty.

By mid-August, police in Ocean County arrested a suspect in Berkeley Township during an attempted collection of $30,000. The arrest followed a sophisticated impersonation scam where victims were led to believe their bank accounts were compromised via fraudulent computer error messages. The suspect was apprehended while attempting to collect cash from an elderly victim who had previously mailed a $50,000 cashier’s check to scammers.
