New Mexico and West Texas face widespread flash flood risks

A significant surge of monsoon moisture is expected to bring widespread heavy rain and a high risk of flash flooding across much of New Mexico and into West Texas from Tuesday through Thursday. Multiple Flood Watches have been issued, covering major areas including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, the Middle Rio Grande Valley, and the Las Vegas and San Miguel County regions. Forecasters warn that rainfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour, with total accumulations reaching between 2 and 6 inches in some locations.

In El Paso and the surrounding Borderland, a Flood Watch is in effect as heavy rains threaten the region. Local authorities and utility providers are encouraging residents to prepare by using sandbags, which are being made available for free at various distribution centers.

Residents in flood-prone areas, including those near arroyos, creeks, and drainage channels, are urged to exercise extreme caution. Officials emphasize the safety mantra, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” advising against attempting to drive or walk through moving water or flooded roadways.
