New Mexico police identify gun owner near scientist's remains

New Mexico State Police have confirmed that a handgun found near the skeletal remains of Melissa Casias was purchased by her husband, Mark Casias. Melissa Casias, an employee at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, disappeared on June 26, 2025, and her remains were discovered on May 28 in a remote area of the Carson National Forest near Taos.

A recent autopsy report revealed that Casias suffered a gunshot wound to the head, though medical investigators have been unable to determine if the death was a suicide or the result of foul play. While the investigation remains active, authorities have not disclosed if any suspects have been identified or if the weapon found near the body had been fired.

Casias’ family has publicly disputed the possibility of suicide, citing alleged inconsistencies at the scene. Before her disappearance, Casias had dropped her husband off at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where both were employed in non-scientific roles, and was last seen walking alone along State Road 518.
