Investigation into death of Los Alamos worker

Overview

The investigation into the death of Melissa Casias, a 53-year-old Los Alamos National Laboratory administrative assistant who disappeared in June 2025, has progressed following the discovery of her skeletal remains in the Carson National Forest.

An autopsy revealed that Casias sustained a gunshot wound through the base of her skull. While the Office of the Medical Investigator classified the manner of death as ‘undetermined’ due to decomposition, a law enforcement source stated the wound placement is ‘inconsistent with suicide and suggests foul play.’

New Mexico State Police have since identified the handgun found near the remains as having been purchased by her husband, Mark Casias, who was also an employee at the laboratory. While authorities have not confirmed if the weapon was fired or if suspects have been identified, Casias’ family has publicly disputed the possibility of suicide, citing inconsistencies at the scene.
