New Mexico screwworm case confirmed ahead of Santa Teresa port reopening

A new case of New World screwworm has been confirmed in a horse in Grant County, New Mexico. This marks the second case in the state since the parasite resurfaced in the United States in June.

The infestation comes as U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced that the Santa Teresa port is scheduled to reopen for Mexican cattle imports on September 24. The port, a major gateway for livestock, had been closed for over a year due to screwworm concerns. Officials stated that the new case in Grant County is not expected to delay the reopening.

The USDA has invested more than $1.3 billion in containment efforts, including drone monitoring and the release of over one billion sterile flies. While there have been 50 confirmed cases in the U.S., nearly 2,000 active cases remain in Mexico.
