Ghanaian political parties mobilize ahead of 2028 elections

Ghanaian political parties are intensifying preparations for the 2028 general elections. Within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for immediate unity to support flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and reclaim government power.

The NPP is currently undergoing significant internal reorganization, including various leadership contests. Candidates are vying for key positions such as National Chairman, General Secretary, and National Communications Director. Notable aspirants include Paul Afoko for National Chairman, Eugene Boakye Antwi for General Secretary, and Dennis Miracles Aboagye for National Communications Director.

In contrast, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) faces internal debate regarding its candidate selection process. Mustapha Gbande, the NDC Deputy General Secretary, has warned that holding an open primary to choose the 2028 presidential candidate could lead to the party’s collapse, suggesting instead that the decision be made by the party’s Council of Elders.

Additionally, political discourse in Ghana remains focused on sector-specific policies. Dr. Bawumia has engaged with small-scale miners to shape the NPP’s mining policy, while NPP lawmakers have raised concerns regarding the potential for parliamentary supermajorities and the scrutiny of legislation like the COCOBOD Bill.
