New Patriotic Party faces calls for reform and fresh primaries in Ghana

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana is facing intense scrutiny regarding its leadership, internal democratic processes, and economic management. Critics have accused the party of presiding over significant financial scandals and economic instability, specifically citing controversies surrounding COVID-19 resources and the tenure of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Following the party's defeat in the 2024 general election, calls for internal reform have intensified. Alex Kwaku Tetteh, founder of Citizen Eye Ghana, has urged the NPP to hold fresh presidential primaries. This demand follows a Supreme Court ruling which determined that political parties cannot restrict candidate selection to a limited group of delegates, asserting that all eligible registered party members must be allowed to participate.

Observers suggest the party must decide whether to merely amend future rules or rectify the current leadership selection process to restore its democratic character and address public demands for accountability.
