New recycling facilities launched in Uganda and Fiji
New recycling initiatives have been launched in Fort Portal City, Uganda, and Tailevu, Fiji, to combat plastic waste and improve environmental management.
In Fort Portal City, Crown Beverages Limited and WastePays have established a PET collection centre. The facility aims to address rising volumes of plastic waste that have overwhelmed existing infrastructure. The centre will serve as a structured aggregation point for PET bottles to be transported for recycling, while also providing income opportunities for local waste collectors.
In Fiji, the Return & Earn programme has expanded with the opening of a new collection centre at Korovou Market in Tailevu. This marks the 15th center in the country and the third within the Nausori Town Council municipality. The initiative facilitates the recovery of plastic bottles and aluminium cans, offering refunds to households, schools, and businesses. Return & Earn Fiji reported recovering over 7.5 million beverage containers during the first half of 2026.
