Fiji waste management and recycling reforms

Overview

Fiji has implemented several initiatives to improve waste management and plastic recycling. The Return & Earn programme expanded with a new collection centre at Korovou Market in Tailevu, contributing to a total of over 7.5 million beverage containers recovered during the first half of 2026.

Building on these efforts, Fiji is pursuing broader systemic reforms through a National Product Stewardship Scheme and new Beverage Container Regulations. These reforms aim to share product lifecycle responsibility among producers, importers, retailers, and consumers. Legislative actions supporting these goals include the Litter (Amendment) Act 2026, which increased penalties for littering, and the National Waste Management and Pollution Control Strategy 2026–2035.

While the government moves toward a Container Deposit Scheme, some stakeholders have raised concerns regarding infrastructure. The Pacific Recycling Foundation has warned that without sufficient collection and processing systems, recyclables may still end up in dumpsites.
