New South Wales deploys shark nets following Coogee Beach attack

Following a traumatic great white shark attack at Sydney’s Coogee Beach in June, Leah Stewart has reunited with the volunteer lifeguard, Charlie Verco, who rescued her. Stewart, a mother of an 18-month-old, survived the attack after being in a coma and undergoing multiple surgeries, including an arm amputation. She credited her desire to be present for her daughter as her primary motivation to survive.

In response to the incident, the New South Wales government has announced enhanced shark mitigation measures. This includes the deployment of more than 50 shark nets across a 250km stretch between Wollongong, Sydney, and Newcastle. While officials stated they will use all available tools to ensure swimmer safety, the use of nets remains controversial. Advocacy groups, including the RSPCA, have raised concerns regarding the impact on non-targeted marine wildlife, such as dolphins and turtles, which have historically made up a large percentage of animals trapped in the nets.
