In June, 34-year-old teacher Leah Stewart survived a severe attack by a large great white shark, estimated at up to four meters, at Coogee Beach in eastern Sydney. Following the attack, Stewart has faced public scrutiny regarding her account of the incident. After appearing on programs such as ‘60 Minutes’ and ‘Good Morning Britain’, Fox FM radio hosts Brendan Fevola, Nick Cody, and Kate Langbroek questioned the validity of her details. Fevola suggested she was “adding mayo” to the story, doubting her ability to make calculated decisions during the struggle. Stewart responded via Instagram, explaining that her calm demeanor in interviews stems from feeling “disconnected” as her mind works to protect her while processing the trauma.

Despite the controversy, Stewart has recently reunited with the volunteer lifeguards, including Charlie Verco, who provided life-saving first aid and CPR. She has since remained focused on her rehabilitation and family life, recently spending Father’s Day with her family in Sydney.

In response to the attack, the New South Wales government announced enhanced shark mitigation measures, including the deployment of more than 50 shark nets across a 250km stretch between Wollongong, Sydney, and Newcastle. While officials stated they will use all available tools to ensure swimmer safety, the use of nets remains controversial. Advocacy groups, including the RSPCA, have raised concerns regarding the impact on non-targeted marine wildlife, such as dolphins and turtles.
