New South Wales expands prison capacity following weapons crackdown

New South Wales authorities are expanding prison capacity following a period of increased violent crime and a major police weapons crackdown. NSW Premier Chris Minns announced a commitment to add hundreds of prison beds to the custody network, including a $47 million investment to recommission the Dawn de Loas minimum security centre at Sydney’s Silverwater jail by early 2027. Additionally, upgrades at Parklea Correction Centre are expected to provide over 360 beds.

The expansion follows a rise in remand numbers, driven in part by tougher bail requirements for alleged domestic violence offenders. In September, one third of record remandees were facing domestic violence charges.

Simultaneously, NSW Police conducted ‘Operation Foil’, a 36-hour stop-and-search blitz involving 500 officers. During the operation, police allegedly searched 4,436 people and seized 108 weapons, including knives and firearms. The crackdown resulted in 150 individuals facing a collective 360 charges. Police Minister Yasmin Catley emphasized that carrying weapons in public will result in arrest and charges.
