New South Wales crime crackdown and prison expansion
Overview
New South Wales police conducted ‘Operation Foil’, a high-visibility, 36-hour stop-and-search blitz involving 500 officers. The operation resulted in more than 150 people being charged with over 360 alleged offences. During the initiative, police scanned 4,436 individuals and seized 108 weapons, including 85 knives and four firearms.
In response to increased violent crime and the weapons crackdown, Premier Chris Minns announced an expansion of prison capacity. This includes a $47 million investment to recommission the Dawn de Loas minimum security centre at Sydney’s Silverwater jail by early 2027, alongside upgrades at Parklea Correction Centre intended to provide over 360 beds. The expansion is also driven by a rise in remand numbers, with one third of record remandees in September facing domestic violence charges.
