New South Wales Government Allocates $304 million for Waterway Restoration and Road Safety Upgrades

The Australian federal government has pledged up to $73.5 million to expand the Restoring Murray Waterways Project across the Edward‑Wakool system in southern New South Wales. The funding will upgrade creeks, wetlands and floodplains, using Murray Irrigation Limited’s gravity‑fed network and adding fish‑friendly crossings to improve environmental flows. NSW Minister for Water Rose Jackson said the work will make smarter use of existing infrastructure to return more water to the environment.

Separately, the NSW Government will invest $230 million in 83 targeted road safety upgrades under the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program. Projects include continuous safety barriers on the Hume Highway, upgrades on the Newell Highway, new traffic signals at key intersections and improved pedestrian crossings. Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison highlighted the aim of reducing serious crashes and saving lives across the state.
