New South Wales invests $1.2 million in flexible safety barriers on Silver City and Sturt Highways

The New South Wales Government is allocating $1.2 million to install flexible safety barriers along the Silver City Highway north of Wentworth and the Sturt Highway west of Euston. The project will provide 12.8 km of barriers, including 44 new flexible sections and 70 end terminals, and will replace existing semi‑rigid barriers with modern flexible systems to reduce crash severity, especially on high‑risk curves.

Work is scheduled to begin on 18 May and is expected to last about six weeks, subject to weather. During construction single‑lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place, with traffic permitted Monday‑Friday from 7 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm. Motorists are advised to allow an extra 5–10 minutes for travel, follow signage and drive to conditions. The upgrades are part of the state’s Towards Zero road‑trauma program aimed at improving safety for regional communities.
