New South Wales man charged after seizure of 44 illegal exotic reptiles

A man in New South Wales has been charged following a Commonwealth search warrant that resulted in the seizure of 44 illegally imported exotic reptiles. The animals, which were found in tanks and terrariums, included venomous snakes, tortoises, turtles, and iguanas.

Many of the seized species, such as Burmese pythons, boa constrictors, and various tortoises, are listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The National Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified several of the species as noxious and invasive to Australian ecosystems.

Authorities noted that possessing CITES-listed animals without a permit is a violation of Commonwealth environmental law. Convictions for these offenses can result in up to five years in prison and fines reaching $364,000.
