New South Wales unveils $290 M coach upgrade and first airport metro train

The New South Wales Labor Government announced a $290 million upgrade of the NSW TrainLink coach network, the biggest investment in the system in over a decade. The nine‑year program expands weekly services to 638 across 49 routes, adds almost 200,000 kilometres of travel per year and introduces a new fleet of accessible coaches with upgraded seating, Wi‑Fi, air‑conditioning, wheelchair access and other modern amenities. The expanded network will serve more than 360 destinations in NSW and neighbouring states, supporting over 580,000 passenger trips annually for work, study, medical appointments and family visits.

At the same time, the first of 12 Siemens‑manufactured trains for the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport line arrived in Sydney after a 23,000‑kilometre journey from Vienna. The train features wider aisles, luggage storage, wheelchair spaces, bicycle storage and real‑time flight information displays, with interior artwork created by Indigenous artists to reflect the communities along the line.

Both projects aim to improve regional and airport connectivity, modernise public transport and accommodate growing passenger demand across the state.
