New South Wales voters support lifting uranium mining ban

Research conducted for the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) indicates that 67 per cent of New South Wales voters support uranium mining if it assists in addressing climate change. The survey of 1,000 voters found that 52 per cent would support uranium extraction in the state following the same methods used in other Australian jurisdictions.

According to the MCA, candidates favoring uranium mining would receive twice as much support as those opposing it. The research highlighted medical and scientific applications as the primary reasons for supporting the industry. The MCA suggests that lifting the current ban on uranium mining could allow New South Wales to gain a first-mover advantage in the global market as demand for low-emission energy grows.

Australia currently holds approximately one-third of the world’s uranium resources and is the fourth-largest producer globally. The MCA noted that the Honeymoon uranium mine in South Australia, located near the New South Wales border, demonstrates the potential for nearby development.
