New South Wales energy transition and mining debates

The energy landscape in New South Wales is undergoing shifts involving renewable energy development, coal mining disputes, and potential nuclear expansion.

In the Hunter–Central Coast renewable energy zone, construction has begun on a solar-battery hybrid project. This collaboration between OX2 and Idemitsu Australia aims to convert a mothballed coal mine into a 135-megawatt solar farm and a 100-megawatt battery storage system, with operations expected by 2028. However, the expansion of the Hunter Valley Operations coal mine faces opposition from the group Parents for Climate. The group claims the mine’s projected emissions could cause approximately $212 billion in global climate damage, which they argue represents an inherited debt of nearly $120,000 for every child in the state.

Parallel to these developments, research by the Minerals Council of Australia indicates growing public interest in uranium mining as a tool to address climate change. The survey found that 67 per cent of New South Wales voters support uranium mining for this purpose, and 52 per cent would support extraction using methods currently employed in other Australian jurisdictions. The Minerals Council suggests that lifting the existing ban could provide the state with a market advantage as global demand for low-emission energy increases.
