New Spitalfields Market installs London's largest rooftop solar array
New Spitalfields Market in London has implemented the city’s largest rooftop photovoltaic installation. Completed in August 2026, the project features 2,730 panels with a total capacity of 1.4 MWp.
Managed by the City of London Corporation, the system is expected to generate approximately 1.27 GWh of electricity annually, which is sufficient to power roughly 470 households. The energy produced will primarily serve the market's high electricity demands for lighting and refrigeration systems, reducing reliance on the municipal grid and cutting carbon emissions by an estimated 225 tons per year.
This investment, valued at over £1 million, is part of the City of London Corporation’s Climate Action Strategy, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions across all operations by 2027. Similar trends toward solar integration in fruit and vegetable markets are also being observed in other regions, such as Bologna, Italy.
