Solar installation at New Spitalfields Market
Overview
New Spitalfields Market, a 13-hectare fruit, vegetable, and flower market in Leyton, East London, has completed the installation of London’s largest rooftop solar system. Managed by the City of London Corporation, the project involved installing 2,730 solar panels across five roofs with a total capacity of 1.4 megawatt-peak (MWp).
The £1 million investment is expected to generate approximately 1.27 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power roughly 470 homes. The energy will primarily support the market’s high-demand lighting and refrigeration systems, reducing grid reliance and cutting carbon emissions by an estimated 225 tonnes per year. This initiative aligns with the City of London Corporation’s Climate Action Strategy to reach net-zero emissions across its operations by 2027.
