New Spitalfields Market, one of the United Kingdom’s largest fruit, vegetable, and flower markets, has implemented London’s largest rooftop solar installation. The project, located at the 13-hectare market in Leyton, East London, consists of 2,730 solar panels spread across five roofs.
Managed by the City of London Corporation, the market is a high-energy consumer due to its near 24-hour operations. The new system has a total capacity of 1.4 megawatt-peak (MWp) and is expected to generate approximately 1.27 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. This output is sufficient to power roughly 470 homes. The installation aims to reduce the market's reliance on the grid and lower its carbon footprint by cutting emissions by an estimated 225 tonnes per year.
The £1 million investment serves as a model for integrating large-scale renewable energy into critical commercial infrastructure. It also supports the City of London Corporation’s objective to achieve net-zero emissions across its own operations by 2027.
