New Tisza bridge and border crossing open between Romania and Ukraine

A new bridge and border crossing point, named the ‘Maramureș–Carpathian Bridge’, has opened over the Tisza River to connect Romania and Ukraine. The facility links Sighetu Marmației in Romania with Bila Tserkva in Ukraine, providing a new land route between the Maramureș county and the Zakarpattia region.

The opening of the crossing is being implemented in stages. The initial phase allows passenger vehicles with a maximum weight of 3.5 tons. Future stages will expand access to heavier vehicles, such as buses, and eventually include pedestrian traffic, with further development planned through December 2027.

Constructed over three years at a cost exceeding 50 million euros (approximately 135.8 million lei), the 268-meter bridge is designed to last at least 100 years. Officials noted that the project is strategically significant for regional connectivity and the defense of NATO’s eastern flank, addressing the increased traffic demands seen since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
