New Winneba land dispute leaves three dead and 15 injured
A violent land dispute between the Gomoa and Effutu communities in Ghana’s Central Region resulted in at least three deaths and approximately 15 to 19 injuries on September 1, 2026. An estimated mob of 300 individuals, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, stormed New Winneba armed with guns, cutlasses, and stones, attacking residents and damaging shops and homes.
In response to the violence, the Inspector-General of Police deployed reinforcements and two armoured vehicles to the area. Six suspects have been arrested and are in custody. Security agencies have established checkpoints and intensified patrols to maintain order.
Political and traditional leaders have reacted to the incident. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called for calm and urged dialogue to prevent further bloodshed, while Gomoa traditional authorities demanded the closure of the Effutu North District Police Station, claiming it is situated on Gomoa land. MP Kwame Asare Obeng also supported the claim that the station's location inflames regional tensions.
